Watermeln, an Amsterdam-based company focused on developing hydrogen-powered generators, has secured €3.5 million in funding from the Amsterdam Climate and Energy Fund (AKEF) and BEEQUIP.

This new investment brings their total to over €4 million, allowing the company to expand its hydrogen generator fleet and solidify its leadership in the sustainable energy market.

Accelerating the Transition to Green Energy

Founded in 2018 by Jeff Wezel and Jasper Baltus, Watermeln provides temporary green electricity to locations that lack access to the grid or have limited capacity, such as festivals, construction sites, and charging stations. With this new funding, the company plans to increase the number of its WM-200 units from three to thirteen and to develop a range of smaller and larger hydrogen generators.

“Our goal is to make hydrogen generators widely accessible and affordable,” says co-founder Jeff Wezel. “This investment allows us to ramp up production and expand our offerings, using our experience from off-grid events and construction sites to lead the market in the transition to sustainable energy.”

Enhancing Product Offerings and Market Reach

Watermeln’s WM-200 units, each with a capacity of 200 kW, are part of the company’s strategy to replace diesel generators with cleaner, hydrogen-based alternatives. The company is also investing in the development of new hydrogen storage tanks and generators to cater to a broader customer base.

“We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective hydrogen solutions that meet our customers’ highest demands,” adds co-founder Jasper Baltus. “With our technology and software ready, this funding equips us to deliver on that promise.”

Backing from Key Investors

The Amsterdam Climate and Energy Fund (AKEF), managed by e3 Partners, focuses on investments in energy transition and circularity projects. Since its launch, AKEF has committed over €86 million to 35 projects. BEEQUIP, known for offering leasing solutions to SMEs for acquiring equipment, has also backed Watermeln, further supporting the company’s growth in the green energy sector.

With this new investment, Watermeln is well-positioned to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen power and contribute to the broader shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
