US chipmaker AMD has announced a $665 million (€614 million) acquisition of Finnish startup Silo AI, a leading European artificial intelligence company. The all-cash transaction, revealed on Wednesday, marks a significant step for AMD in delivering end-to-end AI solutions and bolstering its competitive edge against Nvidia in the high-performance chip market.
Silo AI, renowned as “Europe’s largest private AI lab,” specializes in building large language models (LLMs), particularly for low-resource languages. In May, Silo AI launched an LLM covering Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, English, and programming languages, aiming to create LLMs for every EU language.
Peter Sarlin, CEO of Silo AI, highlighted the strategic importance of multilingual LLMs: “We consider multilingual LLMs to constitute a part of Europe’s digital infrastructure.”
Integration and Future Plans
Upon completion of the acquisition, Silo AI’s team will develop LLMs on AMD’s platforms, enhancing the software integration with the US semiconductors. This move is pending regulatory approval and is expected to be finalized in the second half of this year, potentially becoming one of the largest acquisitions of a European AI startup.
With this acquisition, AMD aims to leverage Silo AI’s expertise to strengthen its AI offerings, driving innovation and expanding its influence in the AI semiconductor market.
