Swave Photonics, a fabless semiconductor company based in Leuven, Belgium, has raised €27 million in a Series A funding round to advance its groundbreaking Holographic eXtended Reality (HXR) platform.

The investment was co-led by imec.xpand and SFPIM Relaunch, with participation from new backers EIC Fund, IAG Capital Partners, and Murata Electronics North America, alongside existing investors Qbic Fund, PMV, imec, and Luminate.

Advancing Augmented Reality with HXR Technology

Swave’s HXR technology enables natural, dynamic 3D holographic imaging using CMOS chip technology for scalable and cost-effective manufacturing. Unlike traditional augmented reality (AR) devices that rely on expensive components like waveguides or varifocal lenses, Swave’s solution:

  • Uses nano-pixel and DynamicDepth technology to create realistic holographic images.
  • Eliminates nausea, discomfort, and bulky hardware.
  • Reduces energy consumption and enhances user experience.

Mike Noonen, CEO of Swave Photonics, remarked:
“This funding accelerates our mission to redefine AR experiences with true holography, delivering efficient and cost-effective solutions for the market.”

Key Innovations and Milestones

Swave Photonics has achieved several significant milestones:

  • Launched its HXR platform in April 2024.
  • Developed the world’s first true-color holographic display.
  • Secured 60 core technology patents, positioning itself as a leader in holographic spatial computing.

Theo Marescaux, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer, emphasized the future of AR:
“AR glasses are poised to become the primary interface for AI-powered spatial computing. Swave’s holistic approach—from real-time compute chips to light engines—sets the standard for advanced AR technology.”

Scaling with Series A Funding

The funding will support Swave’s efforts to:

  • Bring product development kits to market.
  • Scale production through partner semiconductor fabs.
  • Expand its team specializing in photonics and semiconductors.

Investor Confidence

Dmitri Choutov, Co-Founder and COO, highlighted the impact of investor support:
“With this Series A funding, Swave is on track to introduce innovative production devices that meet the growing demand for immersive AR experiences.”

With its innovative HXR platform and strategic backing, Swave Photonics is well-positioned to transform augmented reality and set new benchmarks for sustainable and user-friendly holographic technologies.
