Spexi Geospatial, a Vancouver-based company leveraging blockchain technology for drone imagery, has secured $16.2 million CAD in a Series A funding round.
The round was led by New York-based Blockchange Ventures, a returning investor focused on blockchain innovation.
Revolutionizing Drone Imagery with Blockchain
Founded in 2017, Spexi operates a blockchain-based “fly-to-earn” network. Drone pilots capture high-resolution aerial imagery to support disaster response, smart city development, infrastructure inspections, and natural resource monitoring. Spexi’s imagery is positioned as a cost-effective and high-quality alternative to satellite or traditional aerial photography.rogram. Our NET-targeting approach could provide new solutions where current therapies fall short.”
Incentivizing Drone Pilots with Blockchain Rewards
Spexi Geospatial rewards pilots for capturing imagery across 24-acre hexagonal areas, called Spexigons, using cash and reputation points. These points enhance pilot standing within the network and provide access to preferential capture periods and data processing credits.
The company plans to launch a native crypto utility token, SPEXI, to further incentivize its network, though token distribution is pending regulatory approval.
Scaling Across Industries
With its new funding, Spexi Geospatial will expand applications into autonomous systems, AI, and gaming, while continuing to serve government and emergency response agencies. Earlier this year, Spexi secured a $1 million contract with the Canadian government to provide Earth imagery for wildfire response.
Bill Lakeland, CEO of Spexi, stated: “Our platform combines blockchain and drone technology to deliver superior, scalable data with near-zero emissions. This funding allows us to drive innovation across industries globally.”
Spexi’s Growing Impact
Since inception, Spexi has facilitated over 50,000 drone missions, generating more than 3.7 million aerial images across North America and Europe.
With this funding, Spexi is positioned to expand its blockchain-powered infrastructure network, revolutionizing how industries access and utilize aerial imagery.
