Military AI startup Helsing has raised €450 million, elevating its valuation to €5 billion. The German company plans to utilize this substantial funding to bolster security along NATO’s Eastern Flank, amidst growing concerns over Russia’s threat to Europe.

Founded in 2021, Helsing has quickly become a key player in Europe’s defense technology sector, now ranking among the continent’s most valuable AI startups. The company’s rapid ascent aligns with increasing defense budgets across Europe, spurred by the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Advanced AI Solutions for Defense

Helsing develops sophisticated AI software for weapons, vehicles, and military strategy. Their technology has been integrated into battlefield simulations, electronic warfare systems for fighter jets, and drones used in Ukraine. Additionally, Helsing has ventured into space, enhancing signal intelligence and anti-jamming capabilities in satellites.

With the fresh funds, the firm from Germany aims to further advance its AI technologies, focusing on safeguarding European sovereignty, particularly along NATO’s border with Russia. The company’s founders, Niklas Köhler, Torsten Reil, and Gundbert Scherf, emphasized the urgency of the investment: “European security is at a crossroads and Helsing will play a significant role in enabling democratic societies to deter and defend. Speed is essential.”

Strong Backing from Prominent Investors

The Series C funding round was led by General Catalyst, with participation from notable investors including Elad Gil, Accel, Saab, Lightspeed, Plural, and Greenoak. Jeannette zu Fürstenberg, Managing Director and Head of Europe at General Catalyst, highlighted Helsing’s potential: “Helsing is poised to become a leader in AI for the defense industry, leveraging world-class European talent.”

With this significant investment, the german AI Company is set to accelerate its research and development efforts, reinforcing its capabilities across various domains and enhancing its role in European defense.
