Waterloo-based logistics software firm Descartes Systems Group has acquired Ohio-based 3Gtms (3G) for $164.4 million CAD ($115M USD) in an all-cash deal, strengthening its domestic transportation management capabilities in North America.

3G provides software that helps shippers, 3PLs, and freight brokers optimize road-based shipments through tools for planning, rating, consolidation, and routing. Its platform supports various delivery modes, including truckload, LTL (less-than-truckload), and parcel.

Descartes CCO Andrew Roszko noted that 3G’s API-integrated LTL carrier network and shipment lifecycle tools complement the mission to digitize logistics:

“3G extends our domestic shipping capabilities and enhances our reach with API-connected carriers.”

Ongoing Acquisition Spree

This deal marks the fourth acquisition in 2024, including:

  • MyCarrierPortal (freight risk monitoring) – $32M CAD
  • Sellercloud (order and inventory management) – $149M CAD
  • UK-based BoxTop Technologies – $18M CAD
  • Ireland’s Aerospace Software Developments – $79M CAD

CEO Edward J. Ryan emphasized the strategic fit:

“Like Descartes, 3G has built solutions that connect shippers, carriers, and logistics providers. We’re excited to bring 3G’s team and partners into the Descartes family.”

Founded in 1981 and listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange since 1998, the company continues to pursue growth through acquisitions, even as many Canadian tech companies are being acquired by U.S. firms in a reversal of cross-border trends.

With this deal, the acquirer further solidifies its position as a leader in digital logistics and transportation management solutions across North America and beyond.
