The Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN), based in Edmonton and supported by the federal government, has announced a $6 million call for proposals focused on automation and data-driven innovation in the agri-food sector. Interested parties must submit their project application forms by August 9, 2024.
CAAIN is seeking research and innovation projects that address automation and robotics in agri-food production and processing. Additionally, the network is interested in data-based decision-making tools aimed at reducing risk or optimizing production, as well as projects contributing to the development of smart farm platforms or networks. Projects involving international collaboration are welcome, but CAAIN funding is restricted to Canadian entities, including academic institutions, non-profits, and for-profit organizations. Projects must also involve cash contributions from at least two Canadian small or medium-sized enterprises.
Substantial Funding Opportunities
CAAIN can provide up to $3 million for a single project. To be eligible, project application forms must be received by 4:59 PM on August 9, 2024. Accepted projects are expected to be completed by September 30, 2025, with the possibility of a one-year extension.
Driving Innovation in Agri-Food
CEO Darrell Petras emphasized the importance of data-driven solutions: “We live in a time of rapid change, and it is crucial to support risk-takers and innovative thinkers.” Petras, who became CEO in July 2023, highlighted the mission to drive collaborative AgTech research and innovation across Canada.
Role and Impact
Launched in July 2019 with $49.5 million in funding from the Government of Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund and support from Alberta Innovates, CAAIN aims to foster innovation in the agri-food sector. The organization’s latest funding challenge is expected to drive significant advancements in automation and data-driven technologies within the industry.
