UK-based Aegis Energy, a company focused on building clean energy infrastructure for commercial vehicles, has raised £100 million (€118 million) in funding from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, a specialist investment firm dedicated to energy transition projects in the UK, US, and Australia.

Aegis Energy aims to tackle the pressing challenge of reducing emissions in the commercial vehicle sector, which contributes to 10% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions. With tightening regulations and growing consumer demand for sustainable solutions, fleet operators face increasing pressure to transition to greener energy sources.

The funding will support Aegis Energy’s mission to establish multi-energy refueling hubs designed for trucks and vans utilizing electric, hydrogen, bio-CNG, and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuels.

Christopher Thorneycroft-Smith, co-founder of Aegis Energy, emphasized the importance of infrastructure in enabling this transition:
“Fleet operators need accessible, cost-effective energy solutions to transition successfully. Our hubs provide multiple clean energy options, ensuring flexibility and convenience for long-haul and urban transport.”h, and execute large-scale infrastructure projects focused on ammonia cracking and hydrogen separation.”

Expansion Plans and Key Locations

The initial phase will see the completion of five clean energy hubs by 2027 in strategic locations, including:

  • Sheffield
  • Immingham
  • Warrington
  • Corby
  • Towcester

Construction of the first hub is set to begin in 2025, with operations expected to commence by early 2026. Aegis Energy plans to expand further, with a goal of establishing up to 30 hubs by the end of the decade.

Each hub will be capable of simultaneously servicing 40+ heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and 25+ vans, providing high-speed electric charging alongside other low-carbon fuel options.

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges

Thorneycroft-Smith highlighted the significant barriers fleet operators face, including complex depot infrastructure and costly grid connections, which have slowed the shift to cleaner energy. Aegis Energy’s solution aims to eliminate these hurdles by offering public refueling stations that complement existing logistics operations.

A Sustainable Future for Transport

Aegis Energy’s clean energy hubs are expected to reduce carbon emissions by 14,300 tonnes per year, playing a crucial role in helping the UK achieve its Zero Emission Vehicle mandate and meet net-zero targets by 2050.

With strong backing from Quinbrook and other partners, Aegis Energy is positioned to become a leader in the low-carbon infrastructure sector, supporting the transition to sustainable transport across the UK.
