Luminance, a UK-based legal AI startup, has raised $75 million in Series C funding to scale its AI-powered contract automation platform. The round was led by Point72 Private Investments, with participation from Forestay Capital, RPS Ventures, Schroders Capital, and existing investors March Capital, National Grid Partners, and Slaughter and May.
This brings the total funding to $165 million, including $115 million raised in the past 12 months.
A “Legal-Grade” AI Built for Lawyers
Luminance’s AI contract management platform automates the generation, negotiation, and analysis of legal documents. Unlike general-purpose AI models, Luminance uses a proprietary Legal Pre-trained Transformer (LPT), trained on over 150 million verified legal documents—many of which are not publicly available.
The company’s flagship product, Lumi Go, enables businesses to:
- Automatically draft and negotiate contracts using AI
- Ensure legal accuracy with a “Panel of Judges” AI validation system
- Provide real-time contract insights across the entire legal workflow
CEO Eleanor Lightbody highlighted the platform’s edge:
“Unlike generic AI tools, Luminance’s domain-specific model provides legally reliable outputs that professionals can trust.”
Global Expansion and Enterprise Adoption
The startup has over 700 clients in 70+ countries, including AMD, Hitachi, LG Chem, SiriusXM, Rolls-Royce, and Lamborghini. The company recently tripled its North American headcount, opening new offices in San Francisco, Dallas, and Toronto, while expanding its New York headquarters.
Legacy of Mike Lynch and Cambridge Innovation
Luminance was co-founded by Adam Guthrie and Dr. Graham Sills, both Cambridge-based academics, and was seed-funded by the late Mike Lynch, the entrepreneur behind Autonomy. Lynch, who played a key role in advancing AI-driven legal technology, passed away last year.
The Future of Legal AI
With AI transforming contract management, the company is positioning itself as a leader in enterprise legal automation. The company plans to use its $75M funding to:
- Expand its AI capabilities for more complex contract analysis
- Accelerate international expansion in the U.S. and Europe
- Enhance integrations with law firms and enterprise clients
As AI adoption accelerates in legal tech, Luminance stands out by offering a trusted, domain-specific AI solution, bridging the gap between AI automation and legal accuracy.
