Alicante-based PLD Space, a pioneer in reusable rocket technology, has secured an €11 million loan from COFIDES, a state-owned Spanish finance company, through the Fund for Foreign Investment (FIEX).

This funding supports PLD Space’s mission to strengthen European space infrastructure and expand launch capabilities.

Supporting MIURA 5 Launch Site in French Guiana

The funds will be used to develop the MIURA 5 rocket launch complex at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) in Kourou, French Guiana. Spanning 15,765 square meters, the launch complex is set to host MIURA 5’s maiden flight, scheduled for late 2025.

The €16 million project will generate over 60 direct and indirect jobs in the region and foster collaboration with local suppliers to bolster the aerospace supply chain.

Ezequiel Sánchez, Executive President of PLD Space, emphasized the significance: “This funding validates our efforts to deliver comprehensive payload launch capabilities and highlights the importance of European space sovereignty.”

Advancing Reusable Rocket Technology

Founded in 2011 by Raúl Torres and Raúl Verdú, PLD Space develops reusable rockets to make space access more sustainable and efficient. The company’s flagship projects include:

  • MIURA 1, launched in October 2024, marking Spain’s entry as the 10th nation with direct space capability.
  • MIURA 5, designed for larger payloads, with ongoing development to meet future commercial and scientific demands.

MIURA 1 successfully demonstrated recovery and reuse capabilities, a feat achieved by only three companies in the global space industry.

Strengthening European Space Leadership

The spanish company aims to enhance Europe’s strategic role in the space sector by offering reliable and sustainable launch solutions. COFIDES Chairperson Ángela Pérez lauded the company’s innovation: “PLD Space is a benchmark for reusable rocket technology, reinforcing Europe’s position in technological advancement.”

With facilities in Elche, Teruel, and Kourou, and a team of over 250 employees, PLD Space is poised to make space more accessible while contributing to Europe’s space exploration ambitions.
