Calgary-based healthtech startup OraQ AI has raised $2.6 million CAD in seed funding to advance its clinical decision support platform for dental practices. The round was led by AngelMD, with participation from the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation, Startup TNT, and various dentists, physicians, and family offices.
Founded in 2021 by Dr. Amreesh Khanna, Dr. Mike Parchewsky, and CTO Wayne Madhlangobe, OraQ’s AI-powered platform analyzes medical and dental records to help dentists assess patient risk. It provides evidence-backed insights across seven categories, including gum health, sleep disorders, and cavity profiles, enabling dentists to make consistent, science-based decisions.
“Our platform leverages the collective wisdom of 1,000 dentists to empower clinicians while ensuring patients trust their care recommendations,” said CEO Dr. Amreesh Khanna.
Addressing Industry Challenges
Dr. Khanna, inspired by challenges he observed while rebuilding his practice after Calgary’s 2013 flood, developed OraQ AI to standardize patient assessments and improve communication. “Too many patients leave feeling unsure about their treatment plans,” he noted. OraQ aims to build trust and optimize treatment by providing clear, data-driven insights.
Rapid Growth and Regulatory Milestones
Since securing Health Canada and FDA approval in 2023, OraQ has launched its product and expanded across North America, focusing on independent dental practices. To date, OraQ has raised $3.9 million CAD in equity funding, alongside $1.3 million CAD in non-dilutive financing from programs like Alberta Innovates and Mitacs.
Future Impact
With its AI solution designed as a clinical support tool rather than a diagnostic system, OraQ emphasizes enhancing the decision-making process without replacing the expertise of clinicians. AngelMD’s Dr. Shamir Patel praised the platform’s potential: “OraQ is building a comprehensive system to optimize care, improve practice management, and drive revenue growth.”
OraQ’s mission to standardize dental care through AI-driven insights positions it as a transformative player in the dental industry, helping practices improve patient outcomes while enhancing operational efficiency.
