Forestwise, a North Brabant-based company dedicated to halting deforestation in Kalimantan’s rainforests, has announced a significant investment from Denpasar-based Terratai, a venture builder focused on nature-centric enterprises.

The undisclosed funding will accelerate Forestwise’s efforts in sustainable harvesting, production, and distribution of illipe butter, a viable and traceable alternative to cocoa butter.

Enhancing Rainforest Conservation

Forestwise and Terratai aim to harness the economic potential of illipe nuts and other sustainably sourced rainforest products to double farmers’ incomes with fewer costs compared to monoculture plantations. This partnership supports over 1,000 illipe nut collectors who steward approximately 200,000 hectares of rainforest, nearly three times the size of Singapore.

Strategic Partnership and Impact

Terratai will offer strategic guidance, operational support, and working capital to help Forestwise achieve sustainable growth and attract future investors. The collaboration will also evaluate the business model’s additional benefits in West Kalimantan, focusing on ecosystem services, climate mitigation, and biodiversity protection.

Forestwise’s Mission and Achievements

Founded in 2018 by Dirk-Jan Oudshoorn and Theo Smits, Forestwise aims to stop deforestation by creating markets for valuable rainforest products, providing economic incentives for forest protection, and creating rainforest value. The company focuses on preserving biodiversity-rich areas and creating a regenerative business model benefiting both communities and the environment.

CEO Dirk-Jan Oudshoorn stated, “This collaboration with Terratai marks a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainable rainforest conservation. With their support, we are confident in our ability to scale our impact, diversify our product portfolio, and create lasting value for both communities and the environment.”

Terratai’s Role in Nature-Based Solutions

Terratai, Asia’s first venture builder for nature, is dedicated to amplifying and expanding impactful endeavors in food sustainability and environmental preservation. CEO Matt Leggett praised Forestwise’s unique ability to make meaningful progress in halting and restoring critical forests in Kalimantan while supporting local communities and bringing unique commodities to a global market.

With this strategic investment, the startup is poised to enhance its impact on rainforest conservation, driving sustainable practices and supporting the livelihoods of local communities.
