Germany’s watttron, renowned for its cutting-edge digital temperature control systems, has successfully raised €12M in a Series B funding round. This financial milestone is set to propel the company’s mission to innovate sustainable packaging solutions, with a strategic focus on expanding its footprint in the American and Asian markets.

The funding round was spearheaded by the Circular Innovation Fund (CIF) and the European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF), highlighting a concerted effort to foster sustainable innovation within the packaging sector. Watttron’s journey is further supported by long-standing partners TGFS Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen, Constancia New Business (CNB), SKion GmbH, and BA Mr. Rico Kleinhempel, alongside new investors rallying behind the company’s sustainability goals.

Guillaume Gras, Investment Director at ECBF, praised watttron’s technology for its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions by minimizing material and energy consumption. The technology also promotes the use of monomaterials, greatly improving recyclability. “This investment is more than just financial backing; it represents a commitment to leading the packaging industry towards a more sustainable and efficient future,” Gras remarked.

Innovating for a Sustainable Future

Founded in 2016, watttron is at the forefront of developing digital heating systems tailored for the packaging industry. The company’s sustainability-driven solutions, such as cera2seal and cera2heat, enable the efficient processing of sustainable materials in flexible packaging without sacrificing quality or energy efficiency.

Marcus Stein, CEO of watttron, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “Sustainability is not just a trend for us; it’s a commitment we take to heart. With the support of ECBF and the Circular Innovation Fund, we’re thrilled to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the packaging industry.”

Watttron’s technology has garnered the support of numerous brand owners, including four of the five largest FMCG companies, and OEMs like Coesia, Mespack, and GEA. Material suppliers such as Constantia Flexibles are also adopting watttron’s digital heating technology, which offers precise temperature control at the individual pixel level.

In early 2022, watttron launched the “Packolution” podcast series, providing a platform for international stakeholders to discuss packaging innovations. Additionally, the company expanded its global reach by opening a US office to better serve its North American clientele.

With this latest round of funding, watttron is poised to lead the charge in sustainable packaging innovation, offering solutions that promise to transform the industry’s environmental footprint while enhancing production efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
